In this book, there is a brief explanation of al-Shamā’il al-Muhammadiyyah (the Noble Traits of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him). The Shamā’il are the qualities and characteristics of the Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of Mercy (peace be upon him). They include: His physical qualities, such as: his appearance, his complexion, his features, the way he walked, and the way he sat. His moral qualities, such as: the noble manners he embodied—like his generosity, courage, patience, and excellent character. Imam al-Tirmidhī’s book Al-Shamā’il al-Muhammadiyyah discusses many aspects of the Prophet’s life: how he combed his hair, his clothing, the food and drink he preferred, the cup he used, and his personal belongings such as his ring, sandals, sword, armor, turban, lower garment, and bedding. It also describes how he sat, how he walked, details of his worship, his passing (peace be upon him), and how he may be seen in dreams. All of this is mentioned so that Muslims may know him well and follow his example in both speech and action. It is necessary to know the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a person so that we can follow him with love. Some righteous scholars said: “A person is lacking if he does not know the noble qualities of his Prophet.” This book provides a concise and beneficial explanation—God willing—of the narrations about the Prophet’s noble qualities. The explanation is sufficient for students of knowledge and for all Muslims, without needing to read longer and more detailed books. Additional lessons and recommended practices are included, derived from these narrations, so that we may revive them in our lives and gain the pleasure of God and the companionship of the Prophet (peace be upon him) forever.
